Talk:From CS and Math 101 to Becoming a Data Scientist – Key Steps

When: Monday April 27, 2015 at 11:30AM - 12:30PM

Where: Natural Sciences Fase II, Room A-211

Abstract: Data science is an emerging field that focuses on the study of advanced techniques to extract new knowledge from massive, complex, and heterogeneous datasets. Currently, data-driven models are transforming the way new research findings are discovered and new predictions are estimated. However, what does it take to become a Data Scientist? It is often said that a data scientist is someone who is better at software engineering than a statistician and better at statistics than any software engineer. In this talk, we will discuss how

(a) a solid base of Computer Science, algorithms and machine learning,

(b) a strong foundation on statistical models and probability,

(c) robust programming skills for clearing and transforming data;

(d) a strong background in parallel and distributed systems; and

(e) a solid understanding of ways to illustrate, visualize, and navigate data patterns are all essential for aspiring data scientists.
